Green Family History

Our branch of the Green family originated in Milton near Gravesend in Kent and the first reference found is in 1697.  By 1727 they had moved to East Malling where John Green was in trade as a  Wheelwright.  They had several children whose baptisms  all   appear in the East Malling parish registers. He died in August 1779 aged 82 leaving to  his eldest surviving son John all his working tools and timber and stock in trade at his shops at West Malling and East Malling provided that he paid his brothers, James and George, five pounds after his decease.

John Green married Jane Jones in 1764 and their children were also baptised in East Malling.  It is their second son John who became apprenticed to a papermaker and was working first at Chafford Mill, at Fordcombe near Tunbridge Wells, Kent [see paper mills] and later purchased Hayle Mill at Loose near Maidstone.
